Smukfest Aims for 90% Waste Recycling by 2029

As guests of the Smukfest festival begin their journey home, the cleanup crew has only just begun its work. A substantial effort is underway to manage and sort the festival’s waste effectively. The goal is ambitious: 90 percent of the waste from the festival in Bøgeskoven must be recycled by 2029. So far, the festival has managed to recycle about 80 percent of its waste, which led to nine tons of plastic being transformed into new products last year.

Although the final figures for this year have yet to be calculated, Smukfest’s sustainability coordinator, Cathrine Christensen, is optimistic. She reports that the waste management contractor has noticed a decrease in the total waste volume and an increase in correctly sorted waste. This is a positive sign, but the festival still needs to reach the final ten percent before the goal is met.

To help achieve this last stretch, the festival plans to introduce a deposit system in the camping areas. Guests will have to pay a deposit, which can be refunded if their area is left clean and tidy.

The initiatives are already showing promising results. This year, Smukfest has introduced reusable cups, and results from Sunday indicate that a remarkable 94 percent of these cups were collected and prepared for reuse. This exceeds the festival’s initial goal of 75 percent.

In addition to focusing on recyclability, Smukfest is also working to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions. This will be accomplished through increased use of renewable energy sources and more electric vehicles. The vision is clear: Smukfest aims to be a leading festival in sustainability and environmental responsibility by 2029.
