On Monday, both Jonas Bjerre, the lead singer of the Danish band Mew, and Joseph Duplantier from the French metal band Gojira, will participate in a demonstration against the imprisonment of environmental activist Paul Watson. The event is organized by the political party Alternativet and will take place at 11:11 AM at Christiansborg Slot (Christiansborg Palace) in Copenhagen, which houses the Danish Parliament.
Paul Watson, 73 years old, was arrested on July 21 in Nuuk, Greenland, when his ship “John Paul DeJoria” docked to refuel. Watson’s vessel was en route to prevent a Japanese whaling ship from operating in the North Atlantic. He has been wanted by Japan since 2010 through Interpol, following his interventions against Japanese whalers in Antarctica.
Joseph Duplantier expressed his support for Watson in a press release: “I stand with Captain Paul Watson in his fight to protect the oceans. He is an inspiration to millions of people in a cynical world where criminals are allowed to roam free, while a hero like him is sent to prison for doing what is right.”
On August 1, the Danish Ministry of Justice received a formal request from Japan to extradite Paul Watson. The demonstration on Monday aims to raise awareness about Watson’s case and support his fight for marine conservation.
