Man Arrested After Stabbing Incident in London’s Leicester Square

Police in the United Kingdom have arrested a man following a stabbing incident in Leicester Square, London, which left an 11-year-old girl requiring hospital treatment and a 34-year-old woman with minor injuries. Authorities stated that the event, which occurred on Monday in central London—a popular area among tourists—was not being treated as “terror-related.”

The stabbing took place amidst heightened tensions in the UK after a tumultuous week marked by crowds expressing anti-immigrant and Islamophobic slogans while clashing with police. These disturbances have been fueled by right-wing activists.

Leicester Square, where the attack occurred, sees approximately 2.5 million visitors each week and is home to shops, theaters, cinemas, and restaurants. According to police, the injuries sustained by the 11-year-old girl were not life-threatening, and she received treatment at a local hospital. There were no other suspects involved in the incident, police confirmed.

The Guardian quoted a security guard who reported that he “jumped on” the attacker and confiscated the knife. The 29-year-old guard, who identified himself as Abdullah, told the PA news agency: “I heard a scream. At that moment, I saw a person, around 30 years old, stabbing a girl. I jumped on him, held the hand that had the knife, and brought him down to the ground. I took the knife away from him.”

Abdullah added, “Then a couple of other people came along, and we held him until the police arrived. It took about three to four minutes for the police to come, and then they took him into custody.”

UK police forces remain on high alert following recent disturbances sparked by online posts that falsely identified the suspect in the murder of three girls during a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in northern England as a Muslim migrant. It is still unclear whether the latest stabbing incident is connected to the unrest.

Authorities had prepared for further disturbances over the weekend; however, no widespread violence occurred. Ministers remain on high alert, the office of Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, adding that government efforts to address the aftermath of the violence are ongoing.
