MONTREAL – Alexei Popyrin from Australia, who turned professional in 2017, secured the title in the men’s singles at the National Bank Open on Monday evening, defeating fifth-ranked Andrey Rublev from Russia with scores of 6-2, 6-4. The match lasted 90 minutes and showcased Popyrin’s impressive form.
Popyrin, who was eliminated in the round of 16 in the men’s singles at the Olympic Games in Paris earlier this year, delivered a strong performance with a total of 10 aces and only three double faults against Rublev. The Australian player managed to overcome the challenges posed by four seeded players to win this prestigious ATP 1000 event.
On the other hand, Rublev faced his own struggles during the match, recording four aces, five double faults, and a total of 15 unforced errors, which ultimately cost him the victory.
Popyrin’s triumph marks a significant step in his career as one of the promising talents in men’s tennis and indicates that he could become a strong player on the international scene in the future.
