Coop Introduces Eco-Friendly Meat Packaging in Danish Stores

Customers in Coop stores such as Kvickly, SuperBrugsen, Brugsen, and 365discount will soon experience a change in how they purchase minced meat. Starting Tuesday, they will need to reach for meat packaged in a plastic bag instead of the traditional plastic tray. By September, minced veal and pork will also be packaged this way, meaning that over 90 percent of Coop’s minced meat will be sold in a ‘flowpack’ packaging.

Coop is the first in Denmark to introduce this new type of packaging, which consists of a sealed, thin plastic bag. This packaging format minimizes plastic consumption by 70 percent compared to traditional meat trays. With this change, Coop expects to save 169 tons of plastic and reduce CO2 emissions by 539 tons annually. According to Thomas Roland, the head of quality and responsibility at Coop, the initiative is also aimed at making it easier for consumers to sort their waste at home.

This type of packaging has already been used in supermarkets in other countries such as the Netherlands, where it has reportedly been successful, according to Thomas Roland. However, technology has only recently allowed Coop to implement this packaging line with their meat suppliers. The new flowpack bags should be sorted as plastic waste, similar to traditional meat trays, but they occupy significantly less space.

Although it may require some adjustment for consumers to pick up a bag of meat from the refrigerated section, Coop is optimistic. Thomas Roland hopes that Danes will respond positively to the new packaging, as has been the case in the Netherlands. “It will, of course, require a little adjustment, but we believe consumers will gradually get used to the more direct contact with the meat,” he stated.

It is worth noting that minced chicken, minced meat from the brand Irma, Bornholmergris (a type of pork from Bornholm), and Poppelgris (another pork variant) will continue to be sold in traditional meat trays due to the capacity of their smaller suppliers.
