A woman from Glostrup, a town in Denmark, is facing charges for allegedly misusing the diabetes medication Ozempic, which is also known for its weight-loss effects. During a court hearing on Tuesday, the woman pleaded not guilty to the fraud charges against her. She explained that she had not sold the medication but rather consumed large quantities herself due to a “severe misuse.”
The woman was prescribed Ozempic for the treatment of her diabetes, which was diagnosed in 2020. According to her own account, she began to lose weight significantly, leading her to overuse the medication well beyond the prescribed dosage from her doctor. She is now accused of receiving unjustified medical subsidies totaling 331,763 Danish kroner (approximately $46,000) throughout 2023 and for distributing the medication to others.
Prosecutors claim that the quantity of medication she has collected from pharmacies in 2023 is equivalent to a usage period of 8.8 years at the maximum recommended dose of 2 milligrams per week. However, the woman admits that at certain times, she took up to 6 milligrams per week, which is substantially higher than the recommended dosage.
