Over 100 Deaths in Israeli Attack on Al-Tabin School in Gaza

Al-Jazeera’s Sanad verification agency has examined the details surrounding the Israeli attack on Saturday morning at Al-Tabin School in Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of over 100 people, including women and children. The investigation concluded that the attack was “deliberately timed to cause maximum damage,” with “a significant number of displaced individuals specifically targeted,” according to a statement from the agency on Tuesday.

To reach its findings, Sanad reviewed testimonies from survivors, images of remnants from the bombs used, photographs showing how the bombs penetrated the roof of the school’s affiliated mosque, and documentation of the immediate aftermath of the explosion. Based on the evidence, Sanad indicated that the Israeli military fired the two guided missiles that were used in the attack to strike during the morning prayer.

The missiles “penetrated the mosque’s roof, passed through the first floor where the women’s chapel is located, and exploded on the ground floor, where the men’s chapel is situated,” Sanad noted in its report. The agency added that fragments from at least two bombs used in this targeted attack were of the American GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) type, as confirmed by weapons expert Trevor Ball. These types of bombs are manufactured and exported to the Israeli military by the American company Boeing.

Regarding the timing and location of the missile impacts, Sanad stated: “It is clear that the choice was not accidental.” “The southern missile landed at the beginning of the chapel area, just as the prayer commenced, while the northern missile landed in the sleeping area near restrooms, where displaced individuals were preparing for prayer,” the agency added.

Israeli forces have repeatedly attacked schools that serve as shelters in Gaza, claiming that they are command centers for Hamas, the Palestinian group governing the area, used to conceal fighters and manufacture weapons. At least five such attacks have been reported this month.

Sanad challenged the Israeli military’s assertions that the attack on Al-Tabin School aimed to target Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, who were allegedly present in the men’s prayer area at the time of the attack. Al-Jazeera pointed out that the attacks occurred during prayer time in a mosque serving displaced civilians. It also cited images and testimonies from survivors, which indicated that, contrary to the Israeli military’s claims, fires broke out in areas outside the floor that Israel said it had targeted exclusively, resulting in the deaths and injuries of civilians.

“The evidence strongly suggests a deliberate and calculated attack aimed at causing extensive loss of life,” stated Sanad. The attack has renewed calls for the United States to halt its support for Israel, including arms transfers, which human rights advocates argue contribute to atrocities in the Palestinian enclave.

The “massacre” at the school also took place amid fears that the war in Gaza could escalate into a regional conflict following the assassination of Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Haniyeh’s killing occurred hours after another Israeli attack in Beirut, which killed a senior commander of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group in Lebanon. Iran and its allies have accused Israel of the killings and have vowed revenge.
