Danish man faces trial for using fake money in Copenhagen stores

A former owner of a painting company in the Greater Copenhagen area is set to stand trial next week at the Copenhagen City Court for allegedly using counterfeit money in several hardware stores. According to the indictment, the 57-year-old man paid with 14 counterfeit 500-kroner bills over two days in September 2022.

The charges involve visits to multiple hardware stores, including Biltema and Harald Nyborg in Glostrup, as well as Jem & Fix in Kastrup and Bauhaus and Harald Nyborg in Søborg. The man allegedly used the counterfeit money to purchase goods but was uncovered at Biltema, where staff realized that the bill was fake. He fled the scene when the discovery was made.

On the first day, September 21, the man reportedly used counterfeit money at Biltema between 8 AM and 8 PM, and later at Harald Nyborg between 4 PM and 6 PM in Glostrup. The following day, he repeated the actions in several different hardware stores, continuing the fraudulent activity until staff at Biltema intervened.

The accused denies the charges, but the prosecution has made it clear that they will seek a prison sentence. The case, which involves financial crime and fraud, will now be decided in court.
