Pia Kjærsgaard, the former leader of the Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti), underwent surgery on Tuesday following a serious bicycle accident that occurred last weekend. The fall resulted in significant injuries to her arm, which was initially described as being in poor condition. However, after the surgery, reports indicate that Kjærsgaard is not yet fully recovered.
Kjærsgaard expressed that while she generally feels well, her arm has received a nerve block, leaving it completely numb. “I feel good. But my arm has been blocked, which means it feels completely strange. It won’t do what I want,” she stated, reflecting on the challenges of living with a permanent disability.
The unexpected nature of her situation has led Kjærsgaard to think about those who live with serious conditions every day. “I feel completely helpless. But that’s how it is. For people who experience this every day – it must be really tough. So that’s something to consider,” she remarked. She is grateful that her own condition appears to be temporary and can be improved.
During her hospital stay, which lasted until Wednesday, Kjærsgaard took the opportunity to reflect on the importance of bicycle helmets. She also used her social media accounts to encourage her followers to remember to wear a helmet. “People are too careless about using bicycle helmets. And I have been like that myself at times. Many think that they don’t need one for just a short ride. But they actually do,” Kjærsgaard emphasized, noting that her accident could have had far worse consequences.
Kjærsgaard concluded her experience with a call for greater caution in traffic and a general sense of gratitude that her injury is on the path to recovery.
