After nearly three decades in the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), Hans Christian Schmidt has announced his retirement. The former minister from the Liberal Party (Venstre) will not be standing for election in the upcoming vote.
“I think it’s a good time. One must have time to find another [candidate],” said Hans Christian Schmidt, noting that the Haderslev constituency needs time to identify a new candidate who can attract votes.
Hans Christian Schmidt was first elected to the Folketinget in September 1994 and has had a long career filled with various leadership roles and ministerial positions. His notable roles include serving as the Minister of the Environment from 2001 to 2004, Minister of Food from 2004 to 2007, Minister of Transport from 2010 to 2011, and Minister of Transport and Building from 2015 to 2016.
His decision was announced on Wednesday in his constituency, and Schmidt, who will turn 71 later this year, looks forward to his retirement.
