Rising alcohol consumption among Danish youths during studies sparks concerns

An increase in alcohol consumption among young people during the start of their studies is a prevalent trend. A comprehensive survey conducted by Norstat for the Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse) and TrygFonden reveals that nearly seven out of ten young individuals increase their alcohol intake when beginning a youth education program. The study, which included 1,026 representative participants aged 15 to 25, found that more than half expected to start drinking or increase their consumption at the start of their studies.

The high levels of alcohol consumption among young people can lead to numerous negative consequences, warns Peter Dalum, project manager for the Danish Cancer Society and TrygFonden’s ‘Fuld af liv’ (Full of Life) initiative. A significant portion of students in youth educational programs—more than one-fifth—believe that alcohol occupies too prominent a role in their school life. This perception is even more pronounced among students in higher education, where nearly one-third feel that alcohol plays too large a role.

Many educational institutions are aware of the issue and have implemented alcohol policies. These policies range from a zero-alcohol policy during orientation trips to requirements that at least two tutors must remain sober during all activities. The aim is always to ensure that all students can participate in activities without feeling pressured to consume alcohol.

Via University College is one of the institutions placing a high priority on responsible alcohol consumption. “We have seen an increasing demand from our students to regulate the role of alcohol in student life. This reflects a broader societal debate about young people’s alcohol consumption and its consequences,” the institution stated in their alcohol policy. Via University College has also noted a growing diversity among its students, which has led to a greater demand for activities that do not focus on alcohol consumption.
