NEW YORK – Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon in 2023, and British player Cam Norrie announced on Friday that they are withdrawing from the US Open due to injuries. Vondrousova, currently ranked 18th in the world, is dealing with a hand injury, while Norrie, ranked 47th, is experiencing issues with his forearm.
The 25-year-old Vondrousova claimed her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year and was a finalist at the French Open in 2019. She also earned a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. The Czech player has not competed since her early exit in the first round of Wimbledon in July, marking her as the first woman since 1994 to lose her opening match at Wimbledon the year after winning the title.
Petra Martic will take Vondrousova’s place in the women’s draw in New York, while Francisco Comesana will step in for Norrie in the men’s bracket for the season’s final Grand Slam tournament.
The draw for the US Open is set to take place next Thursday, with the tournament beginning on August 26.
