Peter Christiansen has stepped down as the director of Folkemødet (People’s Meeting) following internal criticism and debate regarding the handling of demonstrators. The Folkemødet Association has announced that Christiansen and the board have mutually agreed to end their collaboration. Dennis Nyman, the interim leader of Folkemødet, stated that the extensive media coverage and subsequent pressure have been burdensome for both staff and board members.
Christiansen took on the role in February 2023, but by April, he faced significant criticism from a group of employees who accused him of lacking engagement. The conflict escalated when an email from Christiansen urging the inclusion of demonstrators in discussions led to Benny Engelbrecht, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet), deciding to boycott this year’s Folkemøde.
Christiansen had been on sick leave since August 9, though the reason for his leave has not been confirmed. The board is currently seeking his replacement and has expressed gratitude for his contributions.
Folkemødet, held annually in Allinge on the island of Bornholm, is well-known for its political debates and conversations, taking place in mid-June each year. The event serves as a significant venue for political engagement in Denmark.
