In the upcoming weekend, Copenhagen Police (Københavns Politi) will be visibly present in the city, coinciding with the events of Pride and the Ironman triathlon. Whether participating in Copenhagen Pride, competing in the Ironman event, or marking the start of the school year, the increased police presence aims to ensure safety in the streets.
Copenhagen Police have announced plans for heightened visibility this weekend due to current events and an ongoing gang conflict that necessitates special attention and security measures. “Citizens will therefore experience more police in the streets,” they stated in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
This initiative is intended to reassure the public against any potential feelings of insecurity that may arise from seeing increased law enforcement personnel in the area. Jens Jespersen, Chief Inspector of Copenhagen Police, explained, “We have several major events happening in our jurisdiction this weekend, and we are present more than usual to create an increased sense of safety. It would be unfortunate if this led to the opposite effect due to any perceived insecurity caused by more police officers in the streets.”
Despite the ongoing gang conflict leading to more police officers on duty this weekend, there is no expectation of an increased risk of serious incidents. “There is nothing indicating a greater risk than normal. People can feel secure, just as they usually do in our jurisdiction,” affirmed Jespersen.
Recently, Copenhagen has experienced several shootings, which according to the National Investigation Center for Special Crime (National Enhed for Særlig Kriminalitet), are related to a conflict between a Danish gang and an unidentified criminal group. Among these incidents was the arrest of a 16-year-old Swedish boy for attempted murder related to a shooting incident at Blågårds Plads in Nørrebro earlier this August.
