Andel Energi Faces Extensive Phishing Attack
A significant number of private customers of the electricity company Andel Energi have recently become targets of an intensive spam email campaign designed for fraud. The inquiries from concerned customers have surged, and in just the past week, the company has received over 3,000 reports regarding a specific phishing email. This email claims to be from Andel Energi and urges recipients to update their payment information to avoid the cancellation of their energy agreement.
According to communications manager Rasmus Avnskjold, these 3,000 inquiries represent about 40 percent of all incoming complaints from private customers. He notes that many of these reports come from customers merely trying to alert the company about the received email. Unfortunately, there are also cases where certain customers have been tricked into entering their personal information on a fake website that closely resembles Andel Energi’s official site.
Avnskjold emphasizes that it is challenging to assist those customers who have already submitted their information, as it remains unclear who is behind the fraudulent emails and where the data ends up. The company can only advise affected customers and, in some cases, assist in reporting the fraud to the police.
The current wave of phishing emails began as early as late July and has changed format several times. Initially, the emails claimed that recipients had unpaid balances, often mentioning amounts such as 127 Danish kroner (approximately $19), which could lead recipients to lower their guard and click through without much consideration. However, Andel Energi denies that they would disconnect power from customers without first going through a prolonged collection process and multiple attempts to contact them.
Andel Energi, which serves around one million private customers, is one of Denmark’s largest players in the electricity market. Avnskjold explains that while many customers have become aware of the risks associated with fraud emails, current scammers have become incredibly skilled at making their communications appear credible.
