“Copenhagen Pride Parade Sees Decrease in Participants Compared to Last Year”

On Saturday, the Copenhagen Pride parade filled the streets of Copenhagen with celebration and color, although this year’s event attracted fewer participants than the previous year. According to Benjamin Hansen, the chairperson of Copenhagen Pride, there were at least 15,000 people who joined the parade this year, a significant decrease from the estimated 35,000 participants last year. Despite the lower turnout, police reported that the number of spectators along the route matched last year’s figure, where approximately a quarter of a million people came to watch.

Copenhagen Pride initially expected around 20,000 participants for this year’s event. The parade marks the culmination of a week-long festival dedicated to celebrating diversity and LGBTI+ rights. This year’s route began at Frederiksberg Town Hall and wound through the capital’s streets to Town Hall Square.

Copenhagen Pride has faced challenges since February after the organization expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and questioned partners’ activities in Israel and the Palestinian territories. This announcement led to nearly half of its sponsors withdrawing their support, a fact confirmed by a survey conducted by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) in May.

Despite the loss of sponsors, Benjamin Hansen assured that the execution of the event would not be affected before the festival began. He emphasized that Copenhagen Pride would continue to be a large celebration of inclusion, love, and community in the heart of Copenhagen.

The festival aims to highlight the rights of LGBTI+ individuals, a broad term that encompasses various sexual minorities and gender identities. Therefore, the parade serves not only as an occasion for festivities but also as an important platform for advocating and protecting these rights.
