A 67-year-old police officer has received an increased sentence from the Eastern High Court (Østre Landsret) for abusing his position. On Monday, the court sentenced the officer to 50 days in prison, an increase from the 30 days he received from the Copenhagen City Court (Københavns Byret) in November. The officer has consistently maintained his innocence and appealed the city court’s decision but was denied.
The case centered around an incident from 2022, in which the police officer forwarded a notice to his friend’s daughter. This notice was intended for use in an ongoing custody case and involved an allegation against a man who, according to the document, had shaken his 11-month-old son violently, causing the child to scream desperately. The notice was originally written by the police officer in 2018, following a request from his friend.
During the proceedings at the city court, it was revealed that the daughter had reached out to the police officer in the midst of the custody case, asking him to make the notice more official. This request was made via email. The court determined that the police officer was aware that the document would be used to provide an unjust advantage to his friend’s daughter in the custody matter. Consequently, he was found guilty of abusing his position to unfairly assist an acquaintance.
