Hezbollah Reveals Extensive Tunnel Network in Menacing Video: Experts Sound Alarm

In a recently released video titled “Our Mountains, Our Treasures,” the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah showcased its impressive and secretive tunnel network, which could play a crucial role in any future conflict with Israel. The video, presented last week, displays moving trucks and motorcycles traveling through well-lit underground roads, carrying what appears to resemble missiles. Experts analyzing the video describe it as a clear message to Israel. Nicholas Blanford, a prominent researcher at the Atlantic Council, commented that the video signals Hezbollah has many more capabilities that have not yet been utilized. “We have barely scratched the surface of the damage we can inflict upon you,” stated Blanford.

Since October 8, Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a low-intensity conflict along the border, with Hezbollah aiming to alleviate pressure on Gaza. In the recent hostilities, over 40,000 people have died as a result of Israeli strikes, while Gaza’s 2.3 million residents are on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. The conflict escalated on October 7 after attacks by Hamas on southern Israel led to 1,139 fatalities.

Hezbollah has previously stated that they would cease attacks on northern Israel if a ceasefire with Hamas were established. However, Israel has prevented such agreements and instead intensified its assaults on both Hezbollah and Lebanese communities. The recent video should be viewed in the context of regional unrest, which has increased following the deaths of Hezbollah’s second-in-command Fuad Shukr and Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh. Michael Young, an expert on Lebanon and Middle Eastern affairs, referred to the video as part of a psychological war that Hezbollah is waging against Israel to demonstrate their advanced combat capabilities.

Young noted that the video’s limited information regarding the tunnels’ location and scope serves a deliberate purpose—to protect Hezbollah’s military secrets. This presentation is intended as a deterrent, ensuring that Israel does not underestimate them.

Hezbollah has adopted a strategy of limiting military actions and has, in accordance with its “rules of engagement,” avoided hitting major civilian areas. Should Israel continue to breach these “red lines,” Blanford believes the video may indicate that Hezbollah is prepared to respond if necessary.

While Hezbollah’s video may function as a display of strength to its supporters in Lebanon, questions remain as to whether this will effectively restore deterrence. According to Mohanad Hage Ali from the Carnegie Middle East Center, this video is insufficient to rebalance the situation. However, it does illustrate Hezbollah’s attempts to project power to its base.

As tensions between Israel and Hezbollah rise, the future dynamics of the conflicts remain uncertain. Nevertheless, experts agree that psychological warfare will continue to play a central role in the ongoing conflict.
