US blamed for attacks on Nord Stream gas pipelines, says Lavrov

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that it is “clear” the United States ordered the attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in 2022. This statement follows the issuance of an arrest warrant by German prosecutors for a Ukrainian man in connection with the explosions on the pipelines, which transport Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the explosions were carried out by a Ukrainian crew, allegedly approved by Kyiv’s then-military commander. During a visit to Azerbaijan on Monday, Lavrov asserted that Moscow continues to hold its claims that the West is involved in the attacks. “It is clear that to carry out such a terrorist act, there was an order from the top, as they say. The ‘top’ authority for the West is, of course, Washington,” Lavrov said in a video interview with Izvestia, which was published on their Telegram channel.

However, Lavrov did not provide concrete evidence for his claims and criticized attempts to attribute the blame to a group of drunken officers. “That is not serious,” he added. The United States has not immediately responded to Lavrov’s latest remarks but has previously dismissed Russian allegations of involvement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also suggested in the past that the U.S. was behind the attack, which Moscow has repeatedly described as “sabotage.”

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Ukraine’s former military chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, reportedly overlooked the plan to blow up the pipelines. The outlet further claimed that Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, approved the plan but attempted to halt it after the CIA in the U.S. informed him that they were aware of the plans and warned against them.

On Wednesday, Poland confirmed that it had received a German arrest warrant for a Ukrainian man who is allegedly a suspect in the case. On September 26, 2022, a significant pressure drop was recorded in the pipelines under the Baltic Sea, with seismologists detecting explosions, which triggered a wave of speculation about who was behind the sabotage of this multi-use project that transports Russian gas to Germany.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the explosions, which occurred off the Danish island of Bornholm and damaged three of the four pipes in the system.
