This week, three senior Danish ministers are attending the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. During this event, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be formally nominated as the party’s presidential candidate. The ministers in attendance include Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, who have traveled to the United States to observe the convention.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen is attending on behalf of the Moderate Party (Moderaterne), while Troels Lund Poulsen represents the Liberal Party (Venstre), and Nicolai Wammen is there as a representative of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet). According to Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Danish government parties feel more aligned with the Democrats than with the Republican Party.
Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted on Monday that the Liberal Party has an official partnership with the Democrats. “When I attend the Democratic convention, it is because the Democrats are a sister party to the Liberal Party. We have a long tradition of participating in the convention, and we will do so again this year,” he stated. However, he refrained from commenting on the current U.S. election campaign, emphasizing that it is up to the American people to decide who should win the presidential election.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted that the Danish ministers are willing to collaborate with whoever the American public chooses as president. The Democratic National Convention, which started on Monday, will continue until Thursday. The opening day was marked by a speech from President Joe Biden, who suspended his candidacy in July. Other notable speakers will include former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. The convention will reach its climax on Thursday, when Kamala Harris delivers her closing speech.
The upcoming U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 5. The Republicans have already nominated former President Donald Trump as their candidate.
