Italian Tennis Star Jannik Sinner Avoids Suspension After Positive Doping Test

The top-ranked Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has faced serious allegations after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid in March. Sinner, who recently won the Cincinnati Open, has been stripped of both prize money and ranking points earned at Indian Wells; however, he will not face suspension, as an independent tribunal determined that there was no intention to violate doping regulations. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced this news on Tuesday.

Sinner debuted at number 1 on the ATP rankings in June and is considered one of the leading stars of the new generation of men’s tennis, sharing the spotlight with players like Carlos Alcaraz. The 23-year-old athlete won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, followed by reaching the semifinals at the French Open and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

However, Sinner has been plagued by health issues that kept him away from the Paris Olympic Games after being diagnosed with tonsillitis. During the event at Indian Wells, Sinner tested positive for low levels of Clostebol, a prohibited substance associated with both ophthalmological and dermatological treatments, which was also the reason for the suspension of MLB player Fernando Tatis Jr.

After receiving another positive test in an out-of-competition sample eight days later, Sinner was temporarily suspended. However, this suspension was quickly lifted following a successful appeal. According to Sinner, the test results were due to a member of his support team using an over-the-counter spray containing Clostebol for treating a minor injury, which later led to Sinner receiving treatments.

The ITIA accepted Sinner’s explanation and concluded that there was no intentional violation. The independent committee determined that no period of exclusion should be imposed, which was confirmed during a hearing on August 15.

As Sinner prepares for the upcoming U.S. Open in New York next week, he is likely to be one of the players closely watched, having demonstrated considerable strength on the court.
