The Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova, who won the Wimbledon Championship in 2023, has undergone surgery on her left shoulder. She revealed this in a social media post on Wednesday. “I have been struggling with shoulder pain for several months, and there were no other options but to choose surgery,” wrote Vondrousova, accompanied by a photo of her in a hospital bed. “Everything went well, and I will soon begin my rehabilitation program.”
Vondrousova, 25 years old and a left-handed player, has not participated in any competitions since her first-round exit at the All England Club on July 2, where she was eliminated by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro with scores of 6-4, 6-2 on Centre Court. This defeat made her the first female champion since 1994 to lose her opening match the year after winning the tournament.
Her triumph at Wimbledon last year marked Vondrousova as the first unseeded female champion in the tournament’s history. Due to her shoulder issues, she had to withdraw from both the Paris Olympics and the U.S. Open, which begins in New York on Monday.
The Danish tennis community is closely following Vondrousova’s rehabilitation and hopes to see her back on the court soon.
