OpenAI signs deal with Condé Nast to use media content

OpenAI has entered into a multi-year agreement with Condé Nast, granting the Microsoft-backed startup the rights to use content from media brands such as The New Yorker, Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, and Bon Appétit. The agreement was announced on Tuesday and enables OpenAI to feature Condé Nast’s portfolio content in its AI-driven products, including ChatGPT and the prototype SearchGPT.

Both parties have not disclosed the specifics of the agreement, but Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, stated in a press release that they are committed to collaborating with Condé Nast and other news publishers to ensure that AI maintains accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality journalism while playing a larger role in news dissemination.

In an internal message to employees, Condé Nast’s CEO Roger Lynch emphasized the importance of embracing new technologies while protecting intellectual property at a time when technology companies are undermining media organizations’ ability to monetize content. “Our partnership with OpenAI begins to offset some of the lost revenue, allowing us to protect and invest in our journalism and creative efforts,” Lynch stated. He added that OpenAI has demonstrated a commitment to this mission and has been open to working with publishers to ensure the public receives reliable information and news through their platforms.

This announcement follows a series of similar agreements between OpenAI and various media outlets, including The Financial Times, Associated Press, Vox, Axel Springer, News Corp, Politico, Le Monde, and Prisa Media. Conversely, several media groups, such as The New York Times, The Intercept, Chicago Tribune, and the Center for Investigative Reporting, have sued OpenAI for allegedly using their content without permission or compensation.

Additionally, the Authors Guild and a group of prominent authors, including Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, and George R.R. Martin, have also filed a lawsuit against the company for copyright infringement.
