School Tragedy in Bosnia: Three Staff Killed in Shooting Incident

At least three staff members have lost their lives in a shooting at a school in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to authorities. Among the deceased are the principal, the secretary, and a teacher from the Sanski Most High School Center, as reported by Adnan Beganovic, spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Ministeriet for Indre Anliggender).

The incident occurred at 10:15 AM local time (08:15 GMT). According to sources from Reuters, the shooter was an employee at the school. Sanski Most is located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Sarajevo. Schools in Bosnia are currently closed for the summer holidays, meaning there were no classes at the time of the incident. However, teachers had gathered to prepare for the upcoming school year.

The suspect reportedly used a military firearm, an automatic rifle, to carry out the attack before attempting to take his own life, Beganovic stated on national radio. An additional person is in serious condition and has been hospitalized in Banja Luka, a major city in the region.

According to the Associated Press, the employee had a conflict with the school’s administration. The police have not yet provided a motive for the attack. Law enforcement and emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene.

The Balkan region has a history of small arms and gun violence stemming from the conflicts of the 1990s, which resulted in the disintegration of Yugoslavia, particularly affecting Bosnia, which has a population of around 3.5 million. Mass shootings, however, are rare in the area.

A 2010 survey conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated that there were about 750,000 illegally held firearms in Bosnia. The most recent school shooting in the Balkans occurred in May 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia, where a teenager shot and killed 10 individuals, including nine classmates.
