Following an impressive performance at the Olympics, where he secured two bronze medals, American gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, commonly known as “Pommel Horse Guy,” is set to showcase his dancing skills in the upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars.” The casting news was revealed during Thursday’s episode of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Nedoroscik is the first confirmed contestant announced for the season, which premieres on September 17 on ABC and Disney+. Additionally, he is noted as the first male gymnast to participate in the show, as co-host Robin Roberts pointed out.
The 25-year-old gymnast played a key role in helping the American men’s team win their first Olympic medal in 16 years and expressed his excitement about the competition. “I want to bring some gymnastics into it, maybe a backflip or a handstand,” Nedoroscik shared on the morning program. “I just want to have fun with it.”
Nedoroscik became a viral sensation during the Olympics, partly due to the humorous memes that circulated about his pre-competition preparation — notably, he claimed he did not sleep — and his superhero-like transformation right before he stepped onto the mat (he removes his glasses, similar to Clark Kent). “The memes are funny, and I love them all,” he told the Associated Press in Paris.
The upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars” will be the show’s 33rd season, co-hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, with judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough. The rest of the celebrity cast will be announced at a later date, according to an ABC announcement.
Regarding the iconic glasses that have become a signature part of Nedoroscik’s look, he remarked, “I might have some fun with them. I’m worried they will fly off; that’s what concerns me,” he told the hosts. “Maybe we can create a gadget to keep them in place? Perhaps a new pair of glasses that matches the theme?”
