Conservatives propose initiatives to boost electric cars and fight climate change

The Conservative Party (De Konservative) Proposes New Initiatives to Benefit Electric Cars and Climate

The Conservative Party aims to make electric vehicles (EVs) more appealing through three specific initiatives that will benefit both car owners and the fight against climate change. Party leader Mona Juul announced plans to eliminate the tax on motor liability insurance for electric cars, abolish the current repair threshold, and increase the recycling of spare parts.

Juul stated that cars are often written off if repairs exceed 75% of their market value, even if the damages are merely cosmetic. By removing this threshold, she anticipates that more electric cars will remain on the roads longer, which could reduce their overall carbon footprint, as EV production has a significant CO2 emissions impact.

Data from the Insurance and Pension Association (Forsikring og Pension) reveals that 300 electric cars were declared total losses in 2023, a number expected to rise with the increasing popularity of electric vehicles. Juul emphasizes the advantages of this initiative, describing it as a genuine opportunity for climate improvement.

Moreover, Juul points out that Denmark is lagging behind Sweden in terms of parts recycling for vehicles. While Sweden recycles four times as many parts, less than five percent of car repairs in Denmark involve recycling. Consequently, the Conservative Party seeks to initiate a review of standards and certifications related to the recycling of car parts.

A third proposal from the party is to eliminate the tax on motor liability insurance for electric vehicles, which would result in annual savings of approximately 700 Danish kroner (around $100) for an average family with an electric car.

Juul acknowledges that these are smaller political proposals but stresses the importance of concrete policies. The party intends to discuss these initiatives at their summer group meeting. With a pointed comment aimed at the government, which, according to Juul, talks more than it acts, the Conservative Party seeks to translate words into action.
