Greenland Man Sentenced to Indefinite Detention for Repeat Family Murders – International News

A 35-year-old man in Greenland has recently been sentenced to the country’s most severe penalty, which is indefinite custody, for a murder he committed in Qaqortoq. This is not the first time the man has committed such a crime, as he has previously been convicted of murder. Both of his victims were family members with whom he lived. Most recently, in February 2023, he killed his 53-year-old cousin by beating and kicking him to death, including the use of a frying pan.

Back in 2014, he was also convicted for another family murder. In that case, he murdered his uncle in 2012 with multiple blows and kicks. The measure imposed for his earlier crime had expired before he committed the latest murder in February of the previous year.

The court in Kujalleq, a municipality in southern Greenland, has decided to sentence the man to indefinite custody, which is the strictest punishment under Greenland’s criminal law. This decision means he will now be incarcerated indefinitely, and any possibility of parole will only be achievable through a court order. Prosecutor Alexander Stürup stated that indefinite custody is the only reasonable sanction considering the man’s dangerous nature and repeated violent offenses.

The investigation into the murder in Qaqortoq has been comprehensive. About 60 individuals have been interviewed, and Danish experts have assisted with technical investigations and DNA analyses of evidence. Blood spatter analyses were also conducted, and only on February 9 did the police gather sufficient evidence to arrest the man.

Despite the conviction, the defendant has maintained his innocence and has chosen to appeal the ruling to a higher court.
