Severe Storm Hits Western Jutland, Causes Damage and Disruption – DMI

A severe storm struck western Jutland, Denmark, on Friday afternoon, causing significant disruptions and damage in several areas. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) reported that strong wind gusts reached hurricane strength in Torsminde, located in northern West Jutland.

Local police have received reports of fallen trees in multiple municipalities in Southern Jutland, including Esbjerg, Varde, Aabenraa, Sønderborg, and Haderslev, according to duty officer Ole Aamann from the South and Southern Jutland Police. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

The situation remains precarious inland, where trees have also been reported down in Viborg Municipality, as stated by the Mid and West Jutland Police. In Vejle, a female motorist experienced a startling event when a tree fell onto her car, shattering the windshield. The woman escaped unhurt, but her vehicle sustained material damage, according to Vejle Amts Folkeblad.

The storm, known in the United Kingdom as “Lillian,” has already made its presence felt in northwestern Denmark and is expected to impact the rest of Jutland throughout the evening. DMI issued a warning for strong wind gusts and storm-force winds from 2 PM to 9 PM.

The stormy weather has also posed challenges for train operations. Banedanmark, the Danish railway infrastructure operator, reported that train services between Skive and Struer have been suspended due to a tree falling across the tracks. Additional disruptions were reported on the route between Thisted and Struer, where the police have closed the Oddesund Bridge.

High winds and rising water levels have led to cancellations in ferry traffic as well. The Fanø ferry has halted its departures, and services between Denmark and Norway have also been affected. Color Line and Fjordline have canceled several crossings between Hirtshals and the Norwegian cities of Kristiansand and Larvik. In Larvik, there is concern that a container crane may topple and strike both a bridge and the Danish ferry “Superspeed.” Consequently, authorities are in the process of evacuating passengers and vehicles from the ferry, according to the Norwegian media outlet Dagbladet.

DMI has issued a risk warning for elevated water levels along the central west coast and the Wadden Sea, applicable from 3 PM to 8 PM.
