From September 1, traffic at the Danish-German border will be affected by extensive roadwork expected to last until November. Traffic at the border crossing near Flensburg will be redirected via the highway rest area in Ellund, announced the German highway company Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. The necessary renovation work aims to ensure smoother driving on the highway, which has been in use since 1972.

Preparatory work will begin on August 26, and from mid-September, traffic in both directions will be consolidated onto the northbound lanes. This means that there will only be one lane available in each direction, leading to the closure of the exit towards Flensburg/Harrislee in the southbound direction during this period.

Torben Wiencke, spokesperson for Autobahn GmbH, does not anticipate significant traffic jams, as most of the summer vacation traffic has already concluded. Ole Aamann, a duty officer with the South and South Jutland Police, confirms the upcoming roadwork but does not believe it will pose major traffic challenges for Danish drivers. According to him, the primary work involves asphalt repairs at the Ellund rest area.

The highway section is expected to be ready for normal traffic again by early November, while renovation work at the rest area will continue until the summer of 2025. Bundesautobahn 7, or A7, which this highway is a part of, stretches from the Danish-German border, via the Grenzübergang Ellund (Ellund Border Crossing) and down to Füssen near the Austrian border. At 962 kilometers, it is the longest highway in Germany.
