Danish politicians propose reforms to support homeless and drug users

The Moderates (Moderaterne), a political party in Denmark, have put forward a proposal to eliminate a number of requirements currently imposed on the homeless and substance abusers. This initiative has garnered support from the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet). The aim is to provide the thousands of vulnerable individuals in Denmark with a sense of stability and the opportunity to live differently, free from excessive public demands.

On Sunday, the Moderates introduced a new approach to assisting homeless individuals and those struggling with addiction, which has received backing from the Social Democrats. Christian Rabjerg Madsen, the political spokesperson for the Social Democrats, highlighted that while the welfare state generally functions well for most citizens, it can often be a hindrance for the most vulnerable populations. “We need to change that,” he added.

This proposal is part of the government’s upcoming dignity reform (værdighedsreform), which aims to promote respectful treatment of vulnerable people. Initially, 100 million kroner (approximately 14 million USD) will be allocated to this area, with plans for this funding to be included in the government’s budget proposal, expected to be unveiled next week. Rabjerg Madsen emphasized that access to welfare services must be straightforward for the most marginalized individuals to ensure they receive dignified treatment.

There is also a necessity to reduce bureaucracy, as municipalities often sidestep responsibility, leading to conflicts between psychiatric services and healthcare providers over who should take action. Inspired by an international model, the Moderates propose establishing a single authority that vulnerable citizens can approach for assistance.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the leader of the Moderates, suggests that the entire responsibility could be delegated to a social hub or a non-governmental organization (NGO) to ensure effective support for individuals in need.
