Authorities in Denmark have issued a stern warning regarding safety in sandy dunes and slopes in North Jutland following a tragic incident on Sunday. The warnings come after two serious accidents involving landslides that left three children trapped in the earth. Both the Southwest Jutland Fire Department (Sydvestjysk Brandvæsen) and the police are urging increased caution in coastal areas.

The three children, who were digging holes in the dunes, were taken to the hospital after becoming trapped. Two of the children are reported to be in critical condition, while the third boy is said to be doing well. Recent heavy rainfall has destabilized the dunes, heightening the risk of further landslides. The Southwest Jutland Fire Department and the Mid and West Jutland Police (Midt- og Vestjyllands Politi) have issued alerts through social media and press releases, particularly urging people to avoid venturing off marked paths and staying away from the base of steep dunes.

North Jutland Police reiterated on Sunday that they have cordoned off the affected areas, but they emphasize the difficulty in predicting where similar incidents might occur elsewhere. Authorities are advising parents to closely supervise their children’s activities in natural settings.

When asked by TV 2 about the lack of signage in the area, Police Commissioner Henrik Skriver acknowledged that it may be important to consider, especially since warnings might not be as well-known to tourists as they are to locals. Notably, the trapped children in the incident were all German tourists, which underscores the need for clearer communication of hazards in coastal areas for foreign visitors.
