China has intensified its military presence along its western border with Myanmar in response to the escalating conflict between the military government and armed groups opposed to the coup. According to a statement from the military, the increased patrols, which also include aerial surveillance, will focus on the cities of Ruili, Zhenkang, and other frontline areas.

Ruili, located in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan, serves as a vital route for people and goods traveling to and from Myanmar. The Chinese government has reported instances of shelling that have injured residents and damaged buildings within its territory, as the conflict in Myanmar’s Shan State intensifies.

Fighting has escalated in intensity since the end of last year when ethnic armed groups formed an alliance to push the military out of the area. A ceasefire mediated by Beijing in January broke down at the end of June, with the armed groups claiming to have taken over several military posts in Myanmar as well as gaining control over key cities in a renewed offensive.

The military has responded with bombings and drone strikes and has also restricted internet and mobile communication. Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes due to the conflict.

The Southern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has organized military units to assess soldiers’ ability to mobilize quickly, block and control areas, conduct coordinated attacks, and maintain security and stability in the border region. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has also stated that China will continue its commitment to restoring peace and stability in Myanmar.

Myanmar has been plunged into a serious crisis since the military ousted the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.
