Danish men appeal extensive fraud conviction targeting elderly citizens in new trial

Two men are once again in court on Monday, this time at the Western High Court (Vestre Landsret), as they appeal their sentences for extensive data fraud. In December, they, along with two other individuals, were convicted of a series of frauds that predominantly targeted elderly citizens from November 2020 to June 2022.

The men, who were aged between 19 and 24 at the time of their conviction, received prison sentences ranging from five to six years for their roles in the scheme, which was both systematic and extensive. Their primary methods included phone calls where they impersonated bank employees, coercing elderly victims into disclosing their banking and NemID information (NemID is a national secure login system used in Denmark). With this information, they were able to make or attempt to make purchases online.

Two of the men, now aged 20 and 23, have decided to fight against their sentences in hopes of acquittal. Ahmed Ismail, who was sentenced to five and a half years in prison, and Mahmoud Ahmed Amche, who received a six-year sentence, are both seeking to be exonerated.

The case, which took a total of 35 court days to process at the District Court in Aarhus (Retten i Aarhus), resulted in lengthy prison sentences and revealed fraud against no fewer than 455 elderly citizens, with a potential total loss exceeding 15 million Danish kroner (approximately 2.2 million USD).

Special prosecutor Maj Toftgaard emphasized the seriousness of the convictions in December, stating, “The extent of the frauds is significant, and the methodology is exceedingly unsympathetic, as the perpetrators carefully targeted elderly victims, whom they presumed would be easier to deceive. This represents systematic and meticulously planned organized crime.”

This appeal process is now proceeding in the Western High Court, which has allocated 18 days to review the evidence and determine whether the December convictions should be upheld or modified.
