Danish Series “Huset” Returns with New Season, Shifts Focus to Inmates

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) is set to launch a new season of the popular prison series “Huset” (The House). This announcement was made by DR’s Head of Drama, Henriette Marienlund, during the Copenhagen TV Festival, according to various media sources.

The first season, which premiered last autumn, chronicled the daily lives of four prison guards and their struggles against a hierarchy plagued by drug trafficking and a tarnished reputation. The cast included notable actors such as Sofie GrÃ¥bøl, David Dencik, Charlotte Fich, and Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt, who portrayed the guards facing significant challenges amid the threat of their prison’s closure.

The upcoming season will take a different direction by focusing on four inmates in a women’s prison. “It’s the story of new people,” explains Henriette Marienlund. She adds that the creators of the series aim to highlight another largely unknown aspect of the welfare system through personal stories, which she believes has the potential to become a significant success.

While the first season was presented as a completed miniseries by creator Kim Fupz Aakeson and directors Frederik Louis Hviid and Michael Noer, DR had already left the door open for a sequel at that time. However, according to Marienlund, it may take some time before the new season is ready for viewing, and therefore details about the storyline and cast are not yet fully disclosed.

The first season of “Huset” received positive reviews for its realistic and intense portrayal of life behind bars and the ethical dilemmas faced by the prison guards. Expectations for the upcoming season are consequently high.

“Huset” has succeeded in generating notable interest in the human stories and the complex interactions between staff and inmates within the prison system. Over time, we will see whether the new season can live up to the success and intrigue of its predecessor.
