Russian Offensive Targets Ukrainian Infrastructure – 5 Dead, Several Injured

Russia has launched a comprehensive offensive against Ukraine, resulting in at least five fatalities and several injuries. The attacks appear to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, beginning around midnight and continuing into dawn, affecting various regions across the country. Ukraine’s Air Force reported multiple groups of Russian drones moving toward eastern, northern, southern, and central regions, followed by numerous cruise and ballistic missiles. According to Ukrainian officials, explosions were heard in at least six regions, and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that more than half of the country’s regions were impacted.

Shmyhal communicated via Telegram that “the enemy used various types of weapons: drones, cruise missiles, and Kinzhal [hypersonic missiles]. There are wounded and dead.” The central Dnipropetrovsk region was particularly affected, where Governor Sergiy Lysak confirmed the death of a 69-year-old man. In Zaporizhia, Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that one civilian had died, though further details were not provided. In the city of Lutsk, Russian shelling killed another person and damaged both an apartment building and an infrastructure facility, as reported by Mayor Igor Polishchuk.

Attacks also targeted energy facilities in the Lviv region, leading to partial power outages, according to Governor Maksym Kozytskyi. Additionally, the energy infrastructure in the Kyiv area was struck, resulting in one injury; explosions were audible in the capital, which also experienced a lack of power and water supply.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called upon European countries to send fighter jets to assist in intercepting drones and missiles over Ukraine. “In our various regions of Ukraine, we could do much more to protect lives if the air forces from our European neighbors worked alongside our F-16s and our air defense,” he stated on social media.

At the same time, Russian officials reported that four people were injured in Saratov, where drones hit residential areas in two cities. One drone struck a high-rise building in Saratov city, while another hit a facility in Engels that houses a military airfield which had previously been attacked. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that 22 Ukrainian drones were shot down during the night and morning over eight regions, including Saratov and Yaroslavl.

Both sides have denied targeting civilian sites in their attacks, asserting that their actions are focused on disabling infrastructure vital to the war effort.
