Danish authorities urge citizens to prepare for crises with three-day supplies

The Danish Emergency Management Agency (Beredskabsstyrelsen) encourages the public to prepare for crisis situations by ensuring they have essential supplies for three days. In the coming weeks, 4.5 million adult Danes will receive notifications about this recommendation through digital mail.

This initiative follows the national crisis guidelines presented at the Folkets Meeting (Folkemødet) by the Danish Emergency Management Agency and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen two months ago. Although there is currently no immediate military threat to Denmark, authorities recommend being prepared for other types of crises, such as climate-related incidents or cyberattacks.

Laila Reenberg, Director of the Danish Emergency Management Agency, emphasizes the importance of preparation: “Crises can arise in many ways, and it is beneficial if as many people as possible are ready to handle them. This allows authorities to focus on the most vulnerable in society.”

The digital notification includes an advisory booklet titled “Prepared for Crises” (Forberedt på kriser), which is also available online. The booklet provides detailed advice on how to prepare, including what basic necessities individuals should have on hand.

For the 287,000 Danes who are exempt from digital mail, physical copies of the booklet will be distributed to libraries across the country.

While the message is being widely disseminated, the Emergency Management Agency urges calm. “There is no need for panic buying. It is about thinking through your situation, especially if you have children or individuals with special needs in your household,” says Laila Reenberg.

The digital notifications will be sent out in phases over several weeks due to technical reasons.
