The Danish Prime Minister has expressed a willingness to allow the next Arctic ambassador to work from Greenland, aligning with Greenland’s wishes. This announcement was made by Mette Frederiksen (Socialdemokratiet – Social Democrats) during a press conference in Aalborg on Tuesday.
“I think it’s quite logical that an Arctic ambassador, whose primary task is the Arctic and who represents the entire Kingdom, has their base in the Greenlandic community and among the Greenlandic people,” the Prime Minister explained. “So we would like to accommodate that request,” she added.
On Monday and Tuesday, Mette Frederiksen met with government representatives from both the Faroe Islands and Greenland, including the Faroese Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen and the Chairman of Naalakkersuisut (the Greenlandic government), Múte B. Egede. Together, they discussed the political and economic situation within the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. One of the key topics was the location of the upcoming Arctic ambassador.
“Greenland has specifically requested that the ambassador be based in Greenland. We have discussed this, and there is an openness to it, but there are still points that we need to continue discussing,” commented Múte B. Egede.
