The long-serving mayor of Lemvig, Erik Flyvholm, has announced that he will step down in the upcoming municipal elections in 2025. Flyvholm, who holds the title of Denmark’s longest-serving mayor, has held the position for an impressive 24 years, representing the Liberal Party (Venstre). In a statement to a local media outlet, he expressed that he has made this decision with a clear conscience, marking this term as his last.
With a career in municipal politics spanning 28 years, Flyvholm began his political journey as the mayor of Thyborøn-Harboøre Municipality in 2002. Following the municipal reform in 2007, he became the mayor of the newly established Lemvig Municipality, a position he has maintained ever since. However, when the elections for the city council in Lemvig take place in the autumn of 2025, it will be without the seasoned politician on the candidate lists.
Upon his departure, Erik Flyvholm shares the record for the longest-serving mayors in Denmark with Mogens Christian Gade, the Liberal Party (Venstre) mayor of Jammerbugt Municipality. Gade also chose not to stand for re-election, having shared the role with Flyvholm for many years.
