After an intensive effort, the fire on Skarøgade in Østerbro, Copenhagen, has now been extinguished. However, the consequences of the fire are far from over for the many residents who have been severely affected. Duty officer at the Copenhagen Police (Københavns Politi), Stefan Ladeby, reported that nine apartments have become uninhabitable, necessitating the relocation of residents.
On Monday evening, the roof fire escalated, forcing residents from the affected apartments to spend the night in the nearby Svanemøllehallen, a community hall used for such emergencies. Initially, authorities reported that seven stairwells were evacuated during the fire, but the actual number was higher. In total, 13 stairwells, comprising 112 apartments, were evacuated. It is still unknown how many of these residents were able to return to their homes that same evening.
Stefan Ladeby stated that both the police and the Capital Region’s Emergency Services (Hovedstadens Beredskab) worked at the Skarøgade site throughout the night. The area remains cordoned off while technicians and investigators examine the cause of the fire and attempt to locate its origin. There is currently no information on when the investigations will conclude, or when the restrictions may be lifted.
The fire was reported on Monday at 18:59 (local time). The damage caused by the fire is extensive, particularly to the roofs over four stairwells, with the roof above Skarøgade number 5 being completely destroyed. Chris Garfort, an incident commander with the Capital Region’s Emergency Services, noted that the fire only spread minimally to neighboring properties. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. The cause of the fire is still unclear, but authorities are working diligently to uncover the details.
