Copenhagen Police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of Jonas Sekyere Thomsen, who was fatally stabbed in the Meatpacking District (Kødbyen) 12 years ago. The 21-year-old law student was found dead in a bathroom at the nightclub Bakken in November 2012.
The arrested individual is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning for the continuation of the charges against him, after which he will be presented again at 1 p.m. with a request for pre-trial detention.
Following the murder, the perpetrator fled to Somaliland, where he was arrested and convicted in 2016. He served several years in prison but was later released. An international manhunt, issued by Copenhagen Police in the year of the murder, recently led to his capture in Ethiopia. After negotiations, he was extradited to Denmark.
Deputy Police Inspector Brian Belling emphasizes that the police have always maintained focus on the case, despite the fact that the perpetrator has already served a sentence in Somaliland. The police still believe he can be prosecuted under Danish law. At the time of the murder, the killing of Jonas Sekyere Thomsen was described as apparently senseless, lacking a clear motive.
