Denmark has appointed a permanent Minister for European Affairs, with Marie Bjerre from the Liberal Party (Venstre) designated to oversee the country’s European policy. This role is significant as Denmark prepares for its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2025. Bjerre, who has previously served as Minister for Digitalization and Minister for Gender Equality, steps into this new position aimed at enhancing Denmark’s influence within the EU and ensuring growth and competitiveness.

“European policy is vital for Denmark. The new ministry should be viewed as a permanent institution, not just a temporary solution leading up to and during our EU Presidency,” stated Marie Bjerre.

There had been speculation on whether this ministerial position would be temporary, but Bjerre dismisses such claims, emphasizing that she intends to serve in this role for the remainder of the government’s term. Her focus will center on the green transition, responding to the Ukraine crisis, and safeguarding Europe’s borders.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen from the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet) highlights the importance of this new ministerial position in light of Denmark’s intensified preparations for the EU Presidency. “It is crucial that we have a dedicated minister to ensure a successful Presidency,” says Frederiksen.

Marie Bjerre has underscored that her primary task will be to strengthen Europe’s overall position, which in turn will bolster Denmark’s standing as well.
