Thursday marked the hottest day of the year in Denmark, with temperatures reaching 30.5 degrees Celsius (86.9 degrees Fahrenheit) at Holbæk Airport. This temperature surpassed the record for June. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) emphasized on their social media platforms how unusual it is to experience such high temperatures so late in the summer. To provide some context, the record temperature for August has stood at 36.4 degrees Celsius (97.5 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1975, while in 2022, temperatures climbed to 33.9 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit).
The significant warmth experienced on Thursday is attributed to a warm air flow moving up from the south into Denmark. Overall, many areas across the country recorded temperatures between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius (80.6 to 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit), with some regions experiencing even warmer conditions. As a result, Thursday was warmer than the previous record day this year, June 27, when temperatures reached 30.3 degrees Celsius (86.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in Langø.
Despite the exceptionally warm temperatures on Thursday, a change in weather was expected later in the day, with showers and cooler air masses moving in from the west. DMI meteorologist Martin Lindberg noted that sunny weather would continue in the eastern part of the country for the remainder of the day, while Jutland (Jylland) would see increasing cloud cover indicating an approaching cold front. This cold front is anticipated to move across the country during the afternoon and evening, potentially bringing scattered showers, especially in Jutland.
Friday is set to bring a significant change in the weather, with temperatures ranging between 17 and 22 degrees Celsius (62.6 to 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Lindberg pointed out that while the temperature will drop, the sun is expected to return, allowing for a pleasant weekend with dry and sunny weather and comfortable temperatures. The extension of this sunny period is forecasted to continue into next week, with temperatures reaching up to 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 degrees Fahrenheit), although both sun and clouds are likely to affect the weather, according to DMI’s seven-day forecast.
