Lars Weiss steps in again as the acting Lord Mayor of Copenhagen following Sophie Hæstorp Andersen’s transition to a new ministerial position. Weiss, who has previously held this role, will be appointed as the temporary Lord Mayor, as confirmed by Laura Rosenvinge, a member of the Social Democrats’ (Socialdemokratiet) Economic Committee, to the news outlet Berlingske.
This new appointment is part of a larger ministerial reshuffle, wherein Sophie Hæstorp Andersen has been designated as the new Minister for Social Affairs and Housing (social- og boligminister). Rosenvinge confirmed that Weiss will take on the Lord Mayor role once again, similar to when he assumed the position in 2020 after Frank Jensen stepped down due to allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Weiss’s appointment is pending final confirmation from the Lord Mayor’s office. Meanwhile, Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil, who is swapping roles with Hæstorp Andersen, is now positioning herself as the Social Democrats’ leading candidate for the Copenhagen Lord Mayor position in the upcoming municipal election scheduled for 2025.
Rosenkrantz-Theil has an extensive political career, beginning with the United Left (Enhedslisten) before she switched to the Social Democrats. She has served as the Minister for Social Affairs and Housing since 2022. On Facebook, she expressed her enthusiasm about the possibility of becoming the Lord Mayor candidate in Copenhagen and is now focused on being selected as the Social Democrats’ leading candidate for the municipal election.
The political changes in Copenhagen are being closely monitored, and it will be interesting to see how these new arrangements will impact the city’s future political landscape.
