Lars Weiss is once again being considered as a potential interim mayor of Copenhagen following Sophie Hæstorp Andersen’s transition to the position of Minister of Social Affairs and Housing. This was revealed by Laura Rosenvinge, the political spokesperson for the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet) and a member of the Economic Committee, who announced on Thursday that Weiss is expected to take over the position. “Weiss will be mayor again. He has held the position before,” Rosenvinge stated to the newspaper Berlingske. However, despite the announcement of Weiss’s candidacy by Social Democratic sources, formal confirmation from the mayor’s office is still pending.
Jakob Næsager, the Conservative mayor responsible for the Children and Youth Administration in Copenhagen, has taken a more cautious approach. “We are not in a hurry to appoint a new mayor,” said Næsager. He emphasized that the most important factor is to take the necessary time with the process.
Currently, the plan is for Lars Weiss to serve as interim mayor until September 19th, when the Municipal Council (Borgerrepræsentationen) has a regular meeting scheduled. At this meeting, the mayor will be formally appointed to hold the office until the municipal elections next year.
During Thursday’s meetings among the city’s mayors, which were held without the participation of the Social Democrats, there were detailed discussions about the situation. “The parties outside the Social Democrats have come closer together,” revealed Næsager. Although further meetings are planned, it is unlikely that a final decision regarding the mayoral position will be reached until later in the process.
This discussion has gained importance in light of a larger ministerial reshuffle, which saw Sophie Hæstorp Andersen appointed as the new Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, while Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil is seeking the Social Democratic nomination for the mayoral candidacy in the upcoming municipal election in 2025.
