The northwest Danish town of Nørre Vorupør is in mourning following a tragic incident in which two German boys, aged 9 and 12, lost their lives due to a landslide. According to Louise Lindgaard Johansen, chairman of the Vorupør Citizens’ Association (Vorupør Borgerforening), the town has been enveloped in a somber atmosphere since the accident.
To honor the boys and their families, a memorial service will take place on Wednesday evening. Residents are invited to join a procession from Vorupør Church (Vorupør Kirke) to the beach, where the incident occurred. “We wish to create a respectful closure and provide people an opportunity to discuss the event,” Johansen stated.
The accident happened on Sunday afternoon when the boys were buried under sand and earth in the dunes. They remained in critical condition until Tuesday, when, unfortunately, they passed away, as reported by the Central and West Jutland Police (Midt- og Vestjyllands Politi).
Benny Bak, the leader of the rescue station in Nørre Vorupør, was involved in the efforts to save the boys. He noted that this is the second time a tragic accident of this nature has occurred in the area, with the first incident taking place in 1965. Bak and his colleagues have been deeply affected by the event and have received crisis counseling. “Some cannot sleep due to the images they have in their heads,” he shared.
The town is showing its respect for the deceased boys by lowering flags to half-mast. “This is both for the boys and their families. The entire community is touched by this tragedy,” Bak concluded.
