On Friday morning, the Aarhus Light Rail (Aarhus Letbane) faced an unexpected incident when a train derailed in the city center. While traffic is gradually returning to normal, passengers should still anticipate delays and cancellations. The exact cause of the derailment, which occurred around 11:30 AM near the Comwell Hotel, is still unknown.
The light rail train was en route from Aarhus H (Aarhus Main Station) to Dokk1, a cultural center and public space in the city, when it left the tracks, resulting in significant disruptions in service. Midttrafik, the transport authority responsible for public transport in the Midtjylland region, stated that service will not be fully stable while the investigation is ongoing. Michael Borre, the director of Aarhus Letbane, informed TV2 Østjylland (a regional television station) that the cause of the derailment is unlikely to be revealed on the same day.
To resolve the situation, a specialized crane was called in to get the train back on track. While the crane was operating, it was necessary to halt all light rail services on that stretch, further complicating the situation. Passengers needing to use the light rail again are advised to stay updated through Midttrafik’s website and the Midttrafik Live app for the latest information on service status.
