Jan Kjærgaard Hansen, a member of the left-wing political party Unity List (Enhedslisten) and active in local politics in Faxe Municipality, has been charged with endorsing terrorism. The charge stems from a controversial interview he gave to the Danish newspaper B.T. in May, during which he stated that the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 of last year was morally justifiable. Hansen also compared Hamas and other terrorist groups to the Danish resistance fighters from World War II and expressed openness to collaboration between the Unity List and Hamas.
In a statement to the media outlet *Arbejderen*, which is published by the Communist Party (Kommunistisk Parti), Hansen confirmed his support for the Palestinians’ right to armed struggle and expressed solidarity with both the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and Hamas. According to Hansen, both the DFLP and Hamas deny having committed acts of terrorism or killing civilians, and he argues that labeling these groups as terrorists effectively condemns any armed uprising by an oppressed people.
The interview with B.T. was initially given in connection with a proposal from Hansen and 21 other Unity List members to re-establish the party’s collaboration with the DFLP. This collaboration had previously been suspended after it was disclosed that the DFLP’s military wing participated in the aforementioned terrorist attack on Israel. At that time, Hansen dismissed these claims as unsubstantiated and suggested that they could be indicative of disinformation.
Although the DFLP itself has admitted to involvement in the attack, Hansen refuses to sever ties with the group, drawing parallels to historical cooperation with resistance groups during World War II. However, his proposal to restore collaboration with the DFLP was voted down at the Unity List’s annual meeting in May.
B.T. has attempted to obtain a comment from Jan Kjærgaard Hansen regarding the charges, but has not yet been successful.
