Danish Conservative Party Faces Allegations of Toxic Work Environment in Investigation

Moderate Party Member of Parliament, Karin Liltorp, has responded strongly to recent revelations about a problematic work environment within the party, calling for an investigation to shed light on the situation. According to B.T., current and former employees of the Moderates (Moderaterne) have filed a complaint with the Danish Working Environment Authority (Arbejdstilsynet), describing an atmosphere characterized by bullying and sexism.

Liltorp, who was informed about the situation in early August, acknowledges the need to “clean up the mess” and mentions that there has been a negative atmosphere along with several unfortunate incidents. She has spoken with employees who have expressed feelings of insecurity and experiences with bullying, although she emphasizes that she is not a firsthand witness to these incidents.

A decision has not yet been made as to whether the investigation should be internal or external; however, Liltorp insists that it is essential to address the problem thoroughly in order to restore trust within the party. Tor Madsen, a member of the party’s executive board, suggested to B.T. that an independent lawyer-led investigation should be initiated, as he believes the issues are too serious to be resolved internally.

The complaint submitted to the Danish Working Environment Authority in mid-August names several prominent figures within the party, including the newly appointed Minister of Digitalization, Caroline Stage Olsen, and Party Secretary, Kirsten Munch Andersen. These individuals are accused in the complaint of ignoring inquiries regarding the issues or their involvement in inappropriate behavior. Examples of sexist remarks are also mentioned in the complaint, although specific individuals are not named.

This is not the first time the Moderates have faced allegations of inappropriate behavior. Previous cases have involved Members of Parliament Jon Stephensen and Mike Fonseca, both of whom have left the party due to similar accusations.

Party Secretary Kirsten Munch Andersen stated to B.T. that she was not aware of the specific complaint regarding the poor work environment; however, the pressure for a thorough investigation appears to be growing within the party to address and resolve the serious allegations.
