Danish citizens have set a record for pension contributions in the first half of the year, with nearly 80 billion Danish kroner (approximately 11.4 billion USD), according to new data from the National Bank of Denmark (Danmarks Nationalbank). The impressive savings amounting to 79.8 billion kroner marks the highest amount ever contributed in a first half of a year, significantly increasing the total pension wealth. From the end of 2023 to mid-2024, the pension wealth rose from 4,033 billion kroner to 4,182 billion kroner.
Anne-Louise Lindkvist, head of customer advisory at Sampension, attributes the record-high contributions primarily to the ongoing growth in employment. “The nearly unstoppable growth in employment and increased wages have greatly contributed to these historically high contributions,” she states, adding that many Danes have also voluntarily chosen to supplement their pension savings this year.
Although the pension wealth peaked at the turn of 2021 to 2022, reaching 4,312 billion kroner, there is now hope of approaching this level again. “The current growth in pension wealth indicates that we are well on our way to recovering previous losses, and if the trend continues, it is not impossible to reach the record from the end of 2021 before the year is out,” Lindkvist notes.
Positive trends in the labor market play a crucial role in this development. Over the past two years, the workforce has grown by 70,000 individuals. Particularly in June, a significant milestone was reached with 3,025,200 wage earners, the highest number ever recorded according to Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik). This supports the continued positive development of Danes’ pension savings.
