This summer, the insurance companies Topdanmark and Tryg have reported a decrease in claims related to weather damage to homes and buildings compared to the previous year. Topdanmark stated in an email that they received 4,007 claims for weather damage during June, July, and August. In the previous year, this number was 6,437 claims.
According to Helene Ibsen, head of housing at Topdanmark, the high number of weather incidents last year was attributed to severe cloudbursts and the wettest July on record in Denmark. Similarly, Tryg has also seen a decline in claims related to weather damage. Claims Director Carsten Hvass-Nielsen explained that fewer extreme weather events and better preparedness among customers have led to a 30 percent reduction in weather-related building damage to private homes.
Helene Ibsen noted that the majority of weather-related damages are due to water, which seeps through roofs or accumulates in basements. Martin Lindberg, a duty meteorologist at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), reported that summer 2024 has been the wettest since 2011, with a nationwide total of 295.7 millimeters of precipitation from June to August.
